Advanced 3D Design & Engineering Lab Grades 9–12 | Saturdays, 4:00–5:30 PM 8-Week Fall Session: October 17 – December 12, 2026 Munroe Center for the Arts, Lexington, MA Class Dates: October 17, 24, 31 November 7, 14, 21 December 5, 12 No class: November 28 Design. Engineer. Prototype. This project-based course is designed for high school students who want to go beyond basic 3D modeling and explore more advanced engineering design, prototyping, and digital fabrication. Students will learn how to develop functional designs, apply engineering constraints, test prototypes, analyze problems, and improve their work through iteration. The course emphasizes real-world design thinking, precision, problem-solving, and independent project development. What Students Will Learn Advanced 3D modeling Engineering design process Parametric design concepts Measurement, dimensions, and tolerances Functional and mechanical design Assemblies, moving parts, and mechanisms Prototyping and testing Design for 3D printing Troubleshooting and redesign Independent project planning and development Software & Tools Students may use Autodesk Fusion for more advanced parametric and engineering-focused design, along with other appropriate 3D modeling and fabrication tools. Example Projects Mechanical assemblies • functional brackets • adjustable stands • gear systems • enclosures • moving mechanisms • product redesigns • replacement parts • engineering prototypes • custom tools • independent capstone projects Class Format Students will work through the engineering cycle: Problem → Research → Design → Prototype → Test → Improve Rather than simply following step-by-step projects, students will increasingly be expected to make design decisions, solve problems, and develop their own solutions. Who Should Join? Ideal for students in Grades 9–12 interested in: Engineering • CAD • 3D printing • product design • architecture • robotics • invention • manufacturing • STEM careers No advanced CAD experience is required, but students should be comfortable using a computer and willing to work through design challenges. Returning students may continue with more advanced or independent projects. What Students Take Away Students will develop a stronger understanding of the full product-development process and build a portfolio of digital models, prototypes, and engineering projects.
