Service Description

Junior 3D Engineering & Design Lab Grades 5–8 | Saturdays, 2:00–3:30 PM 8-Week Fall Session: October 17 – December 12, 2026 Munroe Center for the Arts, Lexington, MA Class Dates: October 17, 24, 31 November 7, 14, 21 December 5, 12 No class: November 28 Design. Build. Test. Improve. This hands-on engineering and 3D design program is designed for middle school students who are ready to move beyond basic modeling and explore how real products, structures, and mechanisms are designed. Students will learn how to turn ideas into functional 3D models, test their designs, identify problems, and improve them through the engineering design process. Projects may include structures, moving mechanisms, gear systems, functional objects, prototypes, custom tools, product redesigns, and independent engineering challenges. What Students Will Learn 3D modeling and design Engineering design process Functional and mechanical design Measurement and dimensioning Structures and load testing Gears, hinges, and moving parts Prototyping and iteration Preparing models for 3D printing Troubleshooting and redesign Independent project development Software & Tools Students may use beginner- and intermediate-level tools such as Tinkercad, with opportunities to explore more advanced design tools such as Autodesk Fusion when appropriate. This class is ideal for Grades 5–8 students who enjoy: 3D printing • engineering • invention • building • problem-solving • STEM • design • making things that work No prior 3D printing experience is required. Returning students are also welcome and may work on more advanced projects. Class Format Each class follows a practical design cycle: Challenge → Design → Prototype → Test → Improve Students are encouraged to create their own solutions rather than simply copy a finished model.Students will take home selected completed 3D-printed projects. Standard PLA filament and regular project materials are included. Some larger or specialty projects may require instructor approval. Printing & Projects Not every design will be printed during the same class. Printing depends on design readiness, print time, printer availability, and the class schedule. Projects may be printed after class and distributed during a future session. Some designs may need resizing

Cancellation Policy

Registration & Attendance All students must register for a specific class before attending. Students are only considered “in class” during registered hours. Early arrivals or late pickups require parent/guardian supervision. Students must leave promptly after class. Supervision & Safety Instructors guide students during class time but do not provide supervision before or after. Parents may drop off children but must provide an emergency contact and stay reachable. We will contact parents immediately if a student needs assistance or becomes distressed. Behavior & Expectations Students are expected to act respectfully and work cooperatively. Disruptive behavior or equipment damage may result in removal without refund. Students must follow all safety guidelines when using 3D printers and design tools. Health Acknowledgment By participating, parents/guardians confirm the student: Has no health conditions that prevent safe participation. Will notify instructors of any health changes. Is able to sit/stand for extended periods. Safety & Equipment Policies Equipment is for educational use only. Students must receive instruction before using any 3D printer or tools. No touching/modifying printers without permission. PLA filament is included; overuse may incur extra fees. Students are responsible for cleaning their stations after use. Report injuries or issues immediately; never operate machines without proper training. Cancellation, Refund & Weather Policies Full refund (minus 10% fee) if canceled 3+ weeks before class. 100% credit for cancellations 2+ weeks before class. No refund for last-minute cancellations unless due to medical emergency (with documentation). Weather-related cancellations will be posted online and emailed. If local schools are closed, classes will be canceled or rescheduled. Authorization & Liability I authorize emergency medical care if needed.
